In 2015, Steve Sarkisian was dismissed from his position as the head football coach at USC. He was dismissed for behaviors related to his alcohol abuse.
Monday night, 2024, Sarkisian was the head coach of Texas in their semi-final game of the college football playoff. Sarkisian said 9 years ago he could have never imagined being where he was Monday. After being dismissed from USC, Sarkisian entered alcohol rehab. That began his journey to living out dreams he never imagined he'd be able to live out. It's easy in life, I think, to start believing that life will somehow deliver our dreams come true if we're patient. It's easy to believe the challenges in our lives are not our challenges at all, but obstacles life seems intent on placing before us. It's easy to believe that life is a waiting game and not a changing game. I confess. I held that belief a lot of my life. Like Sarkisian, though, I've had my USC moments. Moments that rocked my world and forced me to begin considering, maybe life is never going to reverse course and start working in my favor. There are moments in life that force you to consider, maybe it's time for ME to start working in my favor, and hope that life responds accordingly. Sarkisian said before the game this week, "hopefully, I can serve as a little bit of a model, that we can change the narrative for ourselves and we can build towards something even greater than we have right now." Many of us are caught in a space of waiting for life to change it's narrative about us. Maybe this is the year WE start changing the narrative about us. Maybe this is the year WE make healthy adjustments to the story we're living, and then sit back at watch what sort of healthy adjustments life makes for us. We can't control life, but we can control whether we wait for life to change for us or we say screw that, I'm going to change me and hope for the best. It's a new year. I say screw that. Go for the change in you.
