Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman recently told his team, "the moment you start dreaming about an outcome is the right moment to start putting in the work to achieve it."
I think Freeman was speaking to the tendency in young people, probably to the tendency in all of us really, to allow our dreams to carry us away. Dreams are blessings that allow us to imagine what we are capable of; dreams are also often the curses that carry us far away from the work required to make those dreams come true. Dreams don't come true because we've had the right dream. Dreams come true because at just the right time we started doing just the right work to make a dream look like a reality. Many of us start this new year with dreams. What kills new year dreams most isn't discovering we started the new year with a faulty dream, it's waking up February 1 and realizing I'm still dreaming when at some point I needed to start doing. It's a bit of an oxymoron if you think about it. Dreams come into existence as something we see at the end of a road. But to make dreams come true, we have to hear those dreams calling us to the beginning of the road. Most dreams fail to come true not because we couldn't cross the finish line but because we could never drag ourselves to the starting line. If your dream is to run a marathon this year, your dream isn't calling you to run a marathon, it's calling you to get up today and run a mile. If your dream is to write a book this year, your dream isn't calling you to write a book this year, it's calling you to get up today and write a page. If your dream is to put ten thousand dollars in your savings account this year, your dream isn't calling you to put then thousand dollars in your savings account this year, it's calling you to put five dollars in there today. Dreams can feel like a glimpse at tomorrow, but in reality, dreams are an invitation to fully live today. Dreams, they are a blessing or a curse. The difference between the two is you. Only you. Come February 1, will you wake up dreaming about the life you want to live in 2025, or will you wake up living out steps in your life that will make that dream come true? Dreams. Blessing or curse? What a gift it is to get to choose.
