God's Love ONly Has One Variable - It's where you choose to stand

Picture
While running the other day, I heard these words to the Josh Baldwin song 'Stand In Your Love.'

When darkness tries to roll over my bones
When sorrow comes to steal the joy I own
When brokenness and pain is all I know
Oh, I won't be shaken, no, I won't be shaken
'Cause my fear doesn't stand a chance
When I stand in Your love

It struck me, that with our human relationships, often how loved we feel depends on who we are with. How loved we feel depends on what is going on in our lives and in the lives of those we love and in the lives of those who love us.

Human love can sometimes feel very fleeting. Human love can feel hit or miss. Human love seems to come with a lot of conditions and variables.

I'm not against human love; to the contrary - I'm a big fan of it. I just don't think human love gives us a complete understanding of God's love. If we're not careful, human love can lead us to be as unsure of God's love as we often get about our love for and from one another.

With assurance, I tell you there is nothing unsure about God's love.

As I was running and listening to this song the other day, it struck me that God's love only has one variable. That variable is me.

God's love is always there - always inviting me to stand in it. If I don't feel it - it's not because it isn't there - it's because I'm choosing not to stand in it.

When I heard this song, I said to God - I'm standing here God. I'm standing here in your love. And you know what - I felt it.

I felt God's love.

Human love can be complicated. God's love isn't. If it is, it's because I am complicated.

I didn't feel God's love because he decided to love me more in that moment. I felt it because I simply decided to stand in the love He always has available to me.

Human love comes and goes. God's love doesn't. With God's love it's often us who come and go.

When we're feeling unloved by God, the prayer isn't 'God, show me your love' - the more appropriate prayer is - 'God, give me the wisdom and courage and strength to come stand in your love.'

Human love is often the right circumstances coming together. God's love is our decision to stand in the right place.

Don't let struggles with human love taint your view of God's love. In fact, when those human struggles fill you with darkness or sorrow or brokenness - don't fear.

Simply change where you are standing.
