3/12/2020 0 Comments Love Without DistractionI saw a beautiful example of the quote below in a quick and unplanned interview last night with Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team. Now, full disclosure, I don't know Mark Cuban. My thoughts are based on a 60 second interview. But in a snippit of time, he exemplified Bob Goff's quote.
In the middle of the Marvericks game last night, it was announced the NBA was suspending their season. So, here is an owner, who makes a lot of money off of his team PLAYING games, finding out they wouldn't be doing it - and maybe not for some time. The interviewer asked Cuban if the NBA response was appropriate. Now, I've noticed lately, when people get asked this question, they use this as a platform to pretend they are suddenly an expert on a virus nobody really knows much about at all. And I find myself contemplating - how did they come to know so much about something nobody really knows anything at all about? But Cuban said, and not a quote, but he said he didn't know much about the disease and he trusted the NBA was talking to all the right people and he was prepared to follow their lead. Follow their lead. He didn't take this opportunity in a national interview to make a distinction about how much smarter he was than anybody else. He just humbly said I don't know and I'll follow those who do. Leadership. Then, he was asked, so, how do you keep the team sharp and ready if they aren't playing. And, keep in mind, this is unscripted, Cuban, without thought, says this is no longer about basketball. This is about people being sick, keeping them from being sick, this is about families and communities. Then, he added, and this is about all of the hourly people we employ here who count on our games for their jobs. So we have to get a program in place to help them. Cuban was not distracted from loving the people he leads. Leadership. Lead without distinction and distraction. A lot to take from that. A lot I know I need to do with that.
