My Soles4Souls friend, Tiffany Turner, who led my trip to to Honduras last summer, challenged me to post a meaningful moment from a Soles4Souls Travel experience.
This picture immediately came to mind. This is Raul Carrasco. He's surrounded by children who adore him. He's surrounded by his people. Raul is a hero in Honduras. He's a hero, sure, because he's a champion MMA fighter. But more than that - he's a hero because his people know his biggest fight is always for them. I thought about that a lot when I returned from Honduras. I thought about how deeply and obviously the people of Honduras care for one another. I suppose it's because most days caring for one another is their only asset. But that made it look no less valuable to me. I struggled with that when I came home, to be honest. Because at times, in my opinion, we are a country that can be far more obvious about how much we care about ourselves than how much we care about each other. Believe me - that is far more confession than it is accusation. I've reflected on that once again this past month, as it seems our affections for one another here at home have risen to the surface. It's meaningful, I believe, that it comes at a time when we've lost so many of the luxuries in life that the folks in Honduras have never experienced. Earlier today, I wrote about how opportunities are often disguised as problems. In many ways, I think we all have an opportunity in this Covid problem to be the kind of hero to each other my friend Raul is to his people in Honduras. We have an opportunity to make it obvious just how much we care about one another.
